Making simple handmade Valentine's Day crafts, gifts, and cards is a great way to get creative at home or in the classroom. Because children grow up way too fast, the keepsakes my daughter made (as time flew by) have become some of my most sacred treasures.

One of my favorite Valentine's Day crafts is these adorable love bug sticker crafts (yes, I said stickers!). They look so cute on my car's dashboard, bathroom mirror, and desktop computer monitor that I leave them there year-round.

One year, my daughter made several adorable love bug crafts to hand out to her classmates for Valentine's Day, and everyone loved them. I recommend using the personalized fabric tags mentioned in the tutorial to make it easy to give them to friends without needing a card.

Another popular craft and gift idea for Valentine's Day (as well as Mother's and Father's Day) is thumbprint heart magnets. They're the perfect gift to send home with students for parents or to make secretly for Mom, Dad, or Grandparents, but they take time to dry.

If you'd like to make them, I recommend spreading this craft project out over a few days of two to three 10 to 20-minute crafting sessions:

• First, practice making thumbprint (or fingerprint) hearts on scrap paper. (The step-by-step craft tutorial and video tutorial provide step-by-step instructions.)
• Next, stamp thumbprint hearts onto precut cards and glue the glass gems to the artwork a short while later. (Be sure to go easy on the glue. A little goes a long way.)
• Finally, glue the magnet onto the bottom of the craft to finish the next day (or later the same day).
• Let the thumbprint magnet crafts sit overnight so they are dry enough to take home, send off, or give away as gifts. However, if care is taken, they can be rushed. (See my tips in the tutorial and the comments for the post.)

Another great idea is to invite children from toddlers to teens to make Thumb-buggy love bug cards for their classmates, family, and friends.
